Hey friends!
Did you miss me? I know I haven’t sent out a newsletter in a few months and I apologize. I’ve also gotten some concerned messages from folks because I’ve dropped off the music radar a little bit lately. I’ve hesitated to share with you all what’s been going on in my life because honestly I’m still figuring it out. As y’all know, I’m a parent now, of an amazing two year old who rocks my world daily:

For years I’ve been supporting myself solely through the income i can scrape together as a touring radical queer musician. I am forever indebted to all of you who have supported this project, made donations, hosted shows, helped spread the word, bought a CD, etc. As Saoirse gets older and economic realities / crises hit hard, I’ve come to a point of realization that I’m just not in a position to support my family solely through music anymore, and I’ve been applying to a number of social justice-focused community and union organizing jobs here in the Boston area. I’m hoping to find a position that will allow me to work full-time for something I believe in while still having enough flexibility to write, record, and perform my music, which I know is important to many people around the world.

Check out my LinkedIn profile for a better picture of some of the paid and volunteer organizing work that I have done: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/evan-greer/39/26/7a4

If you know of any cool community organizations, unions, or non-profits that are looking for a versatile and charismatic person to hire, please let me know! I have over 10 years of experience coordinating projects and campaigns in grassroots social / environmental justice movements and over 6 years of experience as a Communications Coordinator / office administrator for a non-profit focused consulting firm. Positions I am qualified for include campaign organizing, communications, research, education, outreach, office administration, and leadership.

I was pretty bummed out by this decision at first. I had lofty dreams of raising Saoirse always on the road, touring constantly and “making it” as a musician. In a lot of ways, though, that lifestyle doesn’t tickle all my turnips. I’ve never been just a musician. Ever since high school I’ve spent pretty much all the time that I’m not on the road volunteering as a community organizer for a variety of groups from the Common Ground Collective in New Orleans to climate justice network Rising Tide to the Tarek Mehanna Support Committee to the Jericho Movement to Free All Political Prisoners. My involvement in this work is what inspires me to write music. When I’m just on the road all the time, I almost never write.

I had a great conversation the other day with legendary singer/songwriter and community organizer Si Kahn, and he touched on this eloquently. He said a friend had approached him and said, “Imagine how many songs you could have written if you had been a full-time musician rather than splitting your life between organizing and music.”

Si’s response, “Sure, but what would they have been about?”

I resonate strongly with this sentiment, and I am looking forward to this next stage in my career as an activist. I know one thing: I am in this for life. I will never stop organizing, agitating, and raising my voice. I will never stop playing music, touring, performing, or releasing albums. I just might be doing it a little more slowly and strategically, rather than frantically be scrambling to have enough shows to pay the bills.

2) Now Booking for 2012 - 2013On that note, I am still booking tons of shows even while seeking out full-time organizing work! Please get in touch if you have any interest in organizing an event in your community! I’d love to come perform or offer a workshop at your college, high school, church, living room, community center, pub, basement, concert series, LGBTQ center, union hall, protest, riot, or pre-school.

I am mostly booking events on the weekends but am flexible and can adapt. Contact me and we can brainstorm ways to build support in your community to bring me to your town!

All booking inquiries go directly to me, no booking agent. Just hit me up: evangreer@gmail.com

Check out my press-kit: http://www.riotfolk.org/?m=evangreer&p=press_kit

And my Workshop Menu: www.evangreer.org/workshops

And don’t forget to e-mail me if you have ANY inkling that you’d like to help set something up this year! My e-mail again: evangreer@gmail.com

3) New Album Updates (or lack thereof)
Sadly, I can’t report much progress in the production of my new full-length album. My amazing audio engineer, Jory Leanza-Carey of legendary hip-hop trio Broadcast Live, is moving back to Brooklyn with his partner and two kids, and things are a little behind both due to that and due to me being totally broke.

Thank you so much to everyone who has pre-ordered the album or made a donation. Rest assured that your money is still there and will still be used to fund this project as soon as we can raise the rest of it. I am anticipating that my album will be out by early 2013. I know it’s been a long time coming. I promise it will be worth it! I’m so excited about the new music that I’ve been writing and feel that it’s in a whole different realm than what you heard on never surrender. The musicians who I’m gathering for this project are amazing too! Expect some serious surprises and legends from the folk, hip-hop, punk, and rock world to be represented.

You can still pre-order the album on my bandcamp page: http://evangreer.bandcamp.com

The more donations I get to make the album happen, the sooner it will be out! Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. It’s coming!!!!

4) Musicians for Pussy Riot!

If you don’t know about Pussy Riot, the radical feminist punk band whose members have been jailed in Russia for “hooliganism” after performing an anti-government protest song, you must be living under a rock.  Everyone from Madonna to Paul McCartney has come out in support of these brave women who not only oppose patriarchy, the Orthodox Church, and the Russian Government, but who have also been outspoken against Western Imperialism and capitalism.

My fellow Riot-Folk! Collective member, Ryan Harvey, and I are working on a project to support these musicians and to collectively raise the voices of musicians worldwide who support those who dare to raise their voice against systems of oppression.

This project is in its infancy but will feature an incredible lineup of DIY and internationally known performers.

There is a facebook group for the project here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/349699768444758/?ref=ts

And the music will soon be available here:
http://freepussyriot.bandcamp.com

The idea is that artists of all levels can contribute a track that will be available for donation online. People can choose how much to donate for each track, or make one large donation for the right to download all the tracks. ALL THE MONEY WILL GO DIRECTLY TO PUSSY RIOT’s DEFENSE FUNDS to assist them with costs surrounding their incarceration.

If you or someone you know is interested in donating a track, send me the following info:
-Name:
-Band name (exactly as you want it displayed):
-Two sentence description of your band:
-Band websites:

-Promo photo of you / your band
-Album cover if the song is from a previously released album (unreleased material preferred)
-A few sentences about why you support Pussy Riot

E-mail this info to evangreer@gmail.com and be patient because we’re getting a lot of responses already!

We are strongly encourage people to WRITE NEW MATERIAL for this project that is either specifically about Pussy Riot or that relates to the issues that they went to jail for.

For more info on their case visit www.freepussyriot.org

5) Upcoming Shows

E-mail me now: evangreer@gmail.com if you want to help bring me to your town! COLLEGE STUDENTS: i especially need your help to set up events on campuses around the country. Even if you have NO IDEA how to do this, I can walk you through the process and we can make it happen! Just e-mail me: evangreer@gmail.com

Evan Greer May 2012 Friends Not Fans Newsletter!

Hey friends!
It's May! Possibly my favorite month of the year and not just cuz it was my birthday! (And thanks to the hundreds of you who sent birthday wishes!) Truly, though, it's a beautiful time of year here in Boston and I feel endlessly lucky to be able to take my baby to our community garden, see our friends out and about in the street, and drink iced coffee. Mmmmmm. Iced coffee. You know I never used to do caffeine before I had a baby? People change.

Life is very full at the moment as we hit the ground running after coming back from an wonderful West Coast Tiny Fists Tour with Bonfire Madigan. It seems like we never quite get caught up on the to do list! Anyhow, because of that this will be a pretty short newsletter this month, but stay tuned for lots more exciting happenings in June!

THIS MONTH'S CONTENTS:

1) Feature article about me in the Boston Phoenix!

2) Tiny Fists Tour! Stories, Photos, and Video

3) People's Music Network Summer Gathering: June 1 - 3 in High Falls, NY!

4) Great Labor Arts Exchange: June 22 - 25 in Baltimore, MD

5) New Album Updates!

6) Upcoming Shows and Tours

1) Feature article about me in the Boston Phoenix!

I'm very excited about this well-written and in depth article about my music, written by Liz Pelly, that just came out in the Boston Phoenix's Queer Issue! In an issue that features Kate Bornstein and other great folks, I was interviewed about my thoughts on Against Me! lead singer Laura Jane Grace coming out as transgender, mainstream queer politics, intersectionality, transfeminism, and more! The Phoenix is Boston's largest weekly paper and this issue has been getting a lot of attention so i'm really excited!

Here's the link to the article:

Please like this on facebook and share it around to help increase the visibility of transgender parents, musicians, and activists!

You can also check out an online streaming mixtape of 15 of my favorite queer and queer friendly artists including Lah Tere, The Discotays, Led to Sea, Bonfire Madigan, bell's roar, spiritchild, Born In a Cent, Schmeckel, Taina Asili, Broadcast Live, and more! This includes my comments on each song and is kind of a cool idea for a paper to put online, i thought.

The direct link for that is:

2) Tiny Fists Tour! Stories, Photos, and Video

I had the great privilege of spending the entire month of April touring the West Coast with my partner, Erin, our 20 month old (at the time) Saoirse, and legendary riot-grrrrl cellist / composer / activist Bonfire Madigan. We called it the Tiny Fists Tour and it was truly a groundbreaking and exciting experience traveling together as a big and very visible queer family of rockers.

We played about 20 shows between Vancouver and Tijuana and connected with dozens of great grassroots community organizations, student activist groups, LGBTQ+ centers, youth, parents, and more.

I think this was Saoirse's favorite tour to date. He liked it even more than Europe. A typical day went like this: Saoirse and I wake up at 6am or so and go play in the van for a bit while everyone else sleeps. Then we'd go find some vegan breakfast and a playground until 11 or so. Madigan and Erin would wake up and we'd trek to the next gig. Saoirse was able to come to many of the shows that were all ages and started a bit earlier and he had so much fun dancing, singing along, and playing his drum.

Besides the shows we also got to spend some really quality time together and it was a joy getting to know Bonfire Madigan and hearing all her crazy stories of touring with some of the most influential feminist bands of all time, hanging out in Portland with Elliot Smith, and being called to become a mother while being a queer woman music icon. The morning after our show in Eugene we headed to this amazing hot springs that was just the right temperature for Saoirse to swim around in for three hours!
Under the watch of Oregon old growth it was truly a magical place.

One of my favorite shows of the tour was in support of Occupy Sacramento at the Coffee Garden and someone took a great video of most of my set! Check it out on my YouTube Channel!

Don't forget you can also subscribe to my YouTube Channel and get updates when I post videos. I also post a lot of videos and photos when I'm on the road from my Twitter and Facebook accounts, so let's be friends!

You may notice that this is my brand new guitar! Thanks to all of you who donated to the guitar fund, and thanks especially to my dad, Jim Greer, for his support!

If you're bummed you didn't catch the Tiny Fists Tour, don't be! We're already plotting and scheming for an East Coast / Midwest Tiny Fists Tour sometime in the next year or so, and we are always available for one-time events in communities around the continent. Get in touch with me if you want to bring me and Bonfire Madigan to your town! E-mail: evangreer@gmail.com for all booking requests.

I'm also honored to announce that Bonfire Madigan will be playing some cello on my upcoming full length album, which should be out this Fall! (See heading number 5 for updates on that!)

3) People's Music Network Summer Gathering

I have recently re-joined the Steering Committee for the People's Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle (PMN),  a great organization that has been promoting the use of music and culture in movements for social change since long before #Occupy was in diapers.

I hope you'll join me next weekend, June 1st - 3rd for the People's Music Network Summer Gathering at Epworth Camp & Retreat Center in High Falls, NY. The time to register is now and you can do so online at www.peoplesmusic.org

This is an inspiring weekend of political music, workshops, skill-sharing, jamming, an open mic, and more. This summer's gathering features renowned folksinger Si Kahn as an artist in residence and he will be teaching several workshops and performing in the Friday night concert.

PMN is an amazing community. It's where I first met my dear friend and mentor Anne Feeney, and also where I first met Pete Seeger (and played his banjo!) Please spread the word about this wonderful gathering and join us at Epworth June 1 - 3 if you can. It's just an hour south of Albany!

There is a facebook event for the gathering here: http://www.facebook.com/events/315578131846376/

And more info on the PMN website here: http://www.peoplesmusic.org/Summer_2012/index.htm

4) Great Labor Arts Exchange: June 22 - 25 in Baltimore, MD

I also plan on attending and hope you will join me at the Great Labor Arts Exchange: June 22-25 near Baltimore, MD. This is another incredibly moving and powerful event that brings together cultural workers, labor singers, rank and file union members, social justice activists and more from across the country to connect, collaborate, and build our craft and further the use of music, art, and culture in the labor movement and all movements for justice.

The weekend will include a panel on the "new-school" of labor music featuring myself and DC underground hip-hop star Head Roc, as well as many other fabulous workshops, songswaps, and skill sharing with the likes of Anne Feeney, Bev Grant, and many other wonderful artists and cultural workers dedicated to social justice and worker power

From the GLAE page on www.laborheritage.org
  • Meet other unionists from all over the country and abroad
  • Exchange experiences and ideas for artistic expression;
  • Collaborate or engage with other artists, performers, and activists;
  • Share resources with organizers and artists from the Conference on Creative Organizing;
  • Return home rejuvenated, energized and inspired with a battery of new ideas and tools that will make your artistry more engaging and infused.

5) New Album Updates!

Lots of people have been asking about the my new albums. I know I keep pushing the date back, and i'm sorry!!! The truth is that life as a traveling parent activist musician just seems endlessly wonderfully terribly full and hectic and i'm just a lot slower in the studio than I thought I'd be. My amazing engineer / producer / multi-instrumentalist band-mate bestie Jory Leanza-Carey (of hip-hop indie-rock troupe Broadcast Live fame) just had his second beautiful baby, so things have slowed down a bit with recording, understandably.

spiritchild and I are still hoping to release our collaborative hip-hop / folk / punk BACK TO THE ROOTS album by the end of the summer. Check out a sample of what we're doing here: http://backtotheroots.bandcamp.com

my new full-length, full band Evan Greer & Friends album (yet to be titled) will hopefully be ready to release by early Fall. I am still working hard to fund raise enough to release that CD myself. Please consider pre-ordering a copy at http://evangreer.bandcamp.com

Lots of folks have been encouraging me to switch to Kickstarter to crowd-fund this next record, and I probably will get that going toward the end of the summer, so keep your eyes out for that! All you awesome folks who already pre-ordered, don't worry, i haven't forgotten about you! You're going to get an even more extra special gift for your patience! So far I've raised about 15% of the money I'll need to release these songs on CD and online!

I promise this album will be worth the wait. The list of awesome people who will be adding their talent to this record just keeps growing and i'm getting ever more excited about the music we're making for you.

6) Upcoming Shows and Tours

1) What's New?
When you tell the world that you're going to have a baby you get a huge amount of advice. From everyone. People with kids, people without kids. People who "know people who have kids." Everyone. Some of it is super helpful and some less so. But one little saying you hear over and over again is "You know what they say, the days are long but the months are short."

Back to the Roots @ PMN Winter Concert. Photo by Bev Grant

The proverb has certainly rung true for me over these past two busy months. Since I last posted a newsletter, I've been to Kalamazoo and back again with spiritchild performing as our riot-folk / hip-hop duo Back to the Roots, during which time we almost died of hypothermia in Anne Feeney's hot tub. (See section 4 of this newsletter.) We also performed at the People's Music Network (PMN) Winter Concert in Lawrence, MA as part of the 100th Anniversary celebrations of the 1912 Bread & Roses Strike. We rocked hard with the addition of Kirsten Lamb on double bass and were elated to share the stage with Jon Fromer, Emma's Revolution, Bev Grant, Tom Juravich, and so many other great artists. We all missed Anne Feeney, who wasn't able to attend because she broke her wrist in a nasty fall down her basement stairs. On the plus side, though, she just received FABULOUS health news in regards to her battle with cancer, check out her latest Fellow Traveler's Advisory for details.

The gathering was fantastic and I'm excited to announce that I've joined the steering committee for the organization. PMN has been working to further the use of music and culture in movements for change for over 30 years. The next gathering is this summer, July 1 - 3 in High Falls, NY, and I hope to see you there! More info at www.peoplesmusic.org

I performed outside in the snow for the first time in a long time at a picket against Harvard University threatening to lay off hundreds of library workers. Check out my re-write of the classic union tune, "Which Side Are You On?"

Other than that, settling into our new home, being a parent, songwriting, organizing, and enjoying the temporarily mild effects of climate change have taken up most of my time. I have learned just how little sleep I need to function, and also how little work I can get done when I'd rather be playing with my 18 month old. It's a constant balance that i'll probably never get quite right.

2) New Tour Dates Announced:
WEST COAST TINY FISTS TOUR
with BONFIRE MADIGAN SHIVE!

This has been a long time coming but i've finally posted the dates for the much anticipated TINY FISTS TOUR with legendary riot-grrrl cellist Bonfire Madigan Shive. We'll be touring together with our partners and babies carrying heartfelt music, inspiring justice workshops, and a lot of diapers. Sending two bands with babies on the road is quite the logistical feat as you may imagine and we need all the support we can get!

Most importantly, please help us spread the word! If you know anyone in any of the cities we'll be visiting send them a personal note and encourage them to come to the show. They won't be disappointed! If you live in any of these cities and can help put up posters, talk to local media, radio, community organizations, etc. Please let me know!

E-mail: evangreer@gmail.com with all ideas.

Finally, there are a few dates that are not yet filled that we REALLY need your help with! If you know anyone in OLYMPIA, EUGENE, ASHLAND, SACRAMENTO, DAVIS, or the BAY AREA who might be able to help us with a fun house concert, community show, or other opportunity, let me know!

Two things you can do to help!

INVITE PEOPLE TO THE TOUR FACEBOOK EVENT:

Please also re-post this link to your wall, on twitter, etc. Even if you don't live on the West Coast, chances are there are people in your network who do so take a moment to let them know we're coming! Thanks so much for your support.

4) How I Almost Died of Hypothermia
in Anne Feeney's Hot Tub (A Short Novel)

Anne Feeney has a hot tub. This is awesome because Anne Feeney is also the world's best tour guide if you want a roadmap of all the best hot tubs in North America, and the nicest, coolest, most radical people to sit a hot tub with. She's always wanted one and after many years of hard work supporting the movement she sure deserves one. Anne is also a very gracious host, even when she's not home.

When spiritchild, Taleigh, and I were headed out to Kalamazoo for the concert where the first video above was taken, we needed a place to crash between NYC and Michigan, and Pittsburgh seemed logical. We rolled in late during a snow storm and Anne had left keys for us to get in. We were hanging out, had a drink, were playing some music on Anne's guitars, and then I remembered the hot tub. It was already about 1am at this point.

Anne's house sits on a hill with a great view of Pittsburgh, and the hot tub is on a porch about 12 feet from the inclined ground below. We stripped down, left our shoes, phones, and all that inside by the door, and skittered across the snow into the hot tub. It was great, obviously, and we stayed in a for a long time enjoying the hot water and the cold air. Finally I decided to go in for some water. I hauled myself out of the warm bath and crashed through the ice crust over to the glass doors between me and the warm floor inside. The doors were locked.

My mind raced. "We didn't lock the front door did we?" I called to the hot tub. "Did we?"

By that time I had already exceeded the time limit for surival in freezing cold weather with icy rain when you're basically naked so I launched myself back into the hot tub, breathing for the first time since i had left the warm water.

At that point, it was still funny. But that's because we still thought the front door was unlocked. It wasn't, but it wouldn't be another half and hour before I discovered that after having figured out how to climb down to the ground from the 12 foot porch by shimmying down a support beam onto a neighbor's slick, icy, wooden fence, and then running barefoot through the snow and ice to the front of the house. When the front door handle didn't turn, my heart sank, and i dashed back around the house and climbed up to the porch much faster than I would have thought possible if i weren't desperately dependent on getting to Anne's hot tub in order to survive the cold.

At that point we knew we were completely locked out, and we realized that the hot tub was literally the only thing keeping us from near instant death from exposure in this kind of weather.

We were still laughing a lot at that point, because what else could you do? At least the hot tub was warm. It was probably about 3am by then, but we had no way of really knowing. We sat in the tub and ran through a million different plans.

Plan A: We would run half naked up to a neighbors door and bang loudly until they came down and HOPEFULLY let us in and dried us off rather than calling the cops on the naked strangers pounding on their door at 3 in the morning.

Plan B: I would, in my tired, dehydrated state, climb to the second story window above, crawl across an ice covered inclined roof, and hope that it was unlocked, to get inside and let the others in. (We attempted this plan several times before abandoning it, realizing that the only thing that could make the situation worse was if I had a broken arm.)

Plan C: We'd just stay in the hot tub. Anne was in Zimbabwe with her family, but she'd be back the next morning around 11am. If we just stayed in the hot tub we wouldn't get too cold and we could just wait for Anne to get there and let us in.

We kept going around in circles, settling on a plan and then starting to think of the implications, leading us to opt for a different and equally flawed plan.

Eventually, our decision was made for us. We had all started shivering. Our heads were freezing as the snow and rain kept falling on our wet hair, and something else was happening. The hot tub was getting colder. Exposed to the extremely low temperature for so long, it couldn't keep the water as hot as it was supposed to. There was even a little thermometer so we could watch as the temperature got lower and lower. We realized that Plan C was out of the question. If we stayed in the water, we had a good chance of dying of hypothermia in Anne Feeney's hot tub.

While I can think of no more honorable way to die, I wasn't quite ready to give up on life at that moment. We focused ourselves on Plan A. It had to work. It was the only option. Taleigh and I gathered up our white privilege and bathing suits and precariously climbed down to the ground. Before we could head to the front of the house, though, i made a spontaneous, destructive, but potentially life changing decision: I broke down Anne's basement door.

I've spent a lot of time at Anne Feeney's house and I know it pretty well. While we were sitting in the hot tub scheming our escape, i spent a lot of time going over every entrance to the house and thinking about how we might be able to get in. As my feet hit the icy ground below the porch, one more way in occurred to me that i hadn't thought of: the rickety basement door. At that moment I decided I'd rather buy Anne a new lock than wake one of her neighbors up at 4am and hope they had a key to her place!

We fled into the blissfully warm basement and dripped upstairs to let spirit in through the glass doors. We were all shrivelled up like raisins but still laughing, cuz what else could you do? We drank some tea and passed out as the sun was rising.

The next day we had to leave to start driving to Kalamazoo before Anne arrived from Zimbabwe. I left her a check for $100 and we hit the road. After a little while I called her and caught her as she got to the air port. I told her the whole story and she, of course, thought it was hilarious. Thank goodness she has a good sense of humor!

Just after this little incident, as some of you know, Anne fell down the stairs to that very same basement and broke her wrist. Such a bummer as she was just recovering from cancer and getting ready to start performing seriously again. Now that you've heard this tale of Anne's hospitality and kindness, consider heading over to her website to buy one of her wonderful recordings, or make a donation to her to keep her going until she can get back on the road singing for the movement: www.aneefeeney.com

1) Greetings and best wishes for 2012!
Holy wow it's 2012! How did that happen so fast? I swear life has been such a whirlwind the past few months hardly even know where to start with an update. My partner, Erin Ryan, and I finally moved back into Jamaica Plain after spending over a year working hard to purchase a small first-time-homebuyer subsidized apartment in a lovely little neighborhood of Boston. It was a quite the bumpy road and epic adventure but we finally got approved and moved in! You know the economy is really F***'d up when they'll give mortgages to folksingers, eh?

Traditionally, sassy folk musicians make their January newsletters chock full of Top 10 lists and witty remembrance of the previous year. I'm really bad at stuff like that, so I think I'll just skip it and talk some politics.

I don't know about you, but I'm excited for 2012! For the first time in a while it feels like things are starting to move and shake. The melting pot is simmering and I'm hoping that warm spring weather brings it to a BOIL. Let's face it, people have had ENOUGH. When you breathe a sigh of relief because Mitt Romney is the LEAST terrifying republican candidate (which isn't saying much because he's pretty terrifying,) you know things are pretty bad. Meanwhile, President Obama who ran his campaign on the promise that he would close Guantanamo signs a bill allowing for indefinite detention of US Citizens? Makes me think of a rhyme:

don't just occupy wall street
don't just vote
don't just give up
don't just have hope
don't just complain
that the system's broke
don't just react
rise up! revolt!

There's been a lot of interesting activity happening this past year. Occupy Oakland's general strike and the West Coast Port Shutdown stand out as actions with truly revolutionary potential, but we have a long way to go to see the same victories as the Arab Spring. Meanwhile, I'm constantly impressed by the radicalizing of the disparate hacker group Anonymous, who have done some pretty fantastic things like leaking documents from Police Departments around the country. When police and other agents of the state and capitalism have been surveilling, harassing, and attacking activists and dissidents for years it's nice to see them get a taste of their own medicine

This DIY music video of my new song, "Their Days are Numbered" pretty much sums up my hopes and dreams for 2012! I'll see you all at the #SpringOffensive, right?

Please share, tweet, steal, modify, and circulate this video! Make your own music about liberation! We need many voices in the struggle.

2) Follow me on Twitter @evan_greer!

Did you catch how I used a little #hashtag there at the end of that last section? Yup! It's true, I've joined the 21st century and signed up for a Twitter account. I still really don't get how to USE a hashtag properly but i do post lots of interesting stuff there all day long from last minute shows to news articles to photos and videos and more. I also re-tweet a lot of important info on various struggles for justice and liberation and will keep you posted on what's happening around the world!

CLICK HERE TO FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER

Or go to www.twitter.com/evan_greer

And if that's not enough tweeting for you, the Riot-Folk! Collective now has an official Twitter account to? Follow @riot_folk for updates on not just my music but also Ryan Harvey, Adhamh Roland, Brenna Sahatjian, Mark Gunnery, Shannon Murray, Tom Frampton, Ethan Miller, and Kate Boverman!

3) Donate to Support the Anne Feeney Labor History Project!

Okay, so I know I'm always asking for donations for this or that, but that's what solidarity economy is all about! This project is really worth supporting. If you read my newsletter with any regularity I'm sure you're already familiar with the wonderful and legendary labor singer, Anne Feeney, one of my dearest friends and most important mentors. Anne taught me pretty much everything I know about being a touring musician and has been an unstoppable musical force on the side of working people for over 40 years.

As most of you know, Anne has been battling cancer, which has prompted her to get going on some projects she's been putting off for a long time, including researching and writing about her Grandfather, who was an organizer with the United Mineworkers of America, writing some of her own memoirs, conducting video interviews, and archiving the massive amount of labor history material that she has collected in over 40 years of traveling, agitating, organizing, and singing for radical and progressive movements.

Anne is a living labor legend. She was the first woman ever to be a president of an American Federation of Musicians local and her radical feminist politics led to controversy, threats, and having her break-lines cut. She's been arrested on the front lines, her guitar was played by Martin Luther King Jr's right hand man, and wherever oppression has reared it's ugly head Anne Feeney has been there to stand in it's way with a hellraising song or hilarious story. Her hit song, "Have You Been to Jail for Justice," was recorded by Peter, Paul, and Mary, and has been sung by activists in police wagons and jail cells for decades.

I'm going to be spending most of the months of February and March in Pittsburgh with Anne interning with her and helping her wade through the massive amount of work at hand researching and writing both her own memoirs and about her Grandfather and the labor movement. We'll also be conducting video interviews with her about her life, experiences, and work, as well as about current topics like the #Occupy movement, LGBTQ liberation, and more.

We are trying to raise $6,000 to cover our family's expenses while I am in Pittsburgh working with Anne. I won't be touring during this time, which means that our family will have no additional income. We are relying on the movement and those who feel these stories should be told to make this project possible and allow me to be in Pittsburgh helping Anne during this month. Please consider making a donation of any size, every little bit will help push us towards our goal!

If you donate more than $50 I'll send you a rare unreleased CD-R of Anne and I performing together in Philadelphia on May Day 2010! Please put "Anne Feeney" in the note on PayPal! If you'd prefer to send a check or money order, go for it:

You can send them to Anne's address made out to her or to me:

Anne Feeney
2240 Milligan Ave
Pittsburgh, PA
15218

Here's a little video from me and Anne's last tour together:

4) Buy My Electric Guitar!

As part of this fund raising effort, I am selling my beautiful electric guitar! It's a 1980s Fender American Stratocaster in brilliant red. The guitar plays great and it's in mint condition, just one little nick on the back that really just adds some character. I've played it out just a few times in some of my short-lived punk rock side projects, but for the most part it's lived in it's cushy, red velvet lined hard case, which is also included! It plays so smoothly and the pickup sounds really hot.

It's a guitar I love, I just don't play plugged-in often enough to justify having such a nice electric guitar, so I want to see it go to the home of a true rocker, and raise some money for the Anne Feeney internship project at the same time!

I'm not a genius at pricing guitars but it looks like many similar guitars are selling on eBay for between $800 - $1,200. I'd like to get a donation somewhere in this range for the guitar, so contact me with an offer! Let me know if you're interested in seeing some more pictures too!

Know someone who really likes my music? This is the perfect gift for them!!!

E-mail: evangreer@gmail.com with questions!

Here's a few photos:

Shoot me an e-mail if you want to know more about the guitar or see some more photos! E-mail: evangreer@gmail.com

5) Booking for 2012-2013: Bring Me to Your Town!

The new year is here and I am hard at work booking workshops and concerts around the country as well as in Canada, Europe, and Latin America. I'd love to come to your town so get in touch if you have ANY ideas for people or venues that I should contact, local groups, college activist groups, cool teachers, progressive labor unions, etc. who i should connect with in your area!

Have you ever thought about setting up a show in your town, at your high school, college, in your church, at your youth center, cafe, etc. but were never really sure how to do it?

Shoot me an e-mail! I can walk you through the process of organizing and promoting a successful show in your living room or a myriad of other venues in your town! If we really do it right we can raise money for a local grassroots organization or other local cause while keeping me on the road spreading fiery social justice themed music and supporting organizing and activism with interactive workshops.

Contact me: evangreer@gmail.com and we can brainstorm some ideas for organizing an event in your area!

My new website has a WORKSHOP MENU section that lists the workshops I offer for different types of spaces like High Schools and Youth Centers, Colleges and Universities, Labor Unions, LGBTQ Centers, Community Organizations, and more!

Check it out: www.evangreer.org/workshops

As an independent queer artist who refuses to allow any record label to censor or direct what I do, I am 100% reliant on people like YOU who support my music and message to keep this whole show on the road. This is a grassroots effort from the get go and it's easy to get involved! Let's get in touch and brainstorm.

E-mail: evangreer@gmail.com with all booking ideas and questions! or just reply to this newsletter.

6) New Songs and Videos!

There are a bunch of new videos of me online, here are a few good ones, including some unreleased songs!

First here's a bunch of videos from a show I did at Occupy Boston in support of the Indigenous Solidarity and Outreach Working Group on Buy Nothing Day, 2011, just a few weeks before the eviction of protesters from Dewey Square.

Untitled Children's Song LIVE @ Occupy Boston on Buy Nothing Day

"Genocide" poem live @ Occupy Boston on Buy Nothing Day

"Countdown" Live @ Occupy Boston on Buy Nothing Day

And then here's a great video of me and Rick Burkheart (of Prince Myshkins fame) playing my "hit" song "I Want Something" at Occupy Wall Street in Liberty Square just a few weeks before the eviction there:

And another of us playing "!Ya Basta!" the same night. Check out Rick's crazy accordion solo!

And finally, here's a recent video of a rare moment where fellow riot-folk! collective member Ryan Harvey and I crossed paths on tour, this time at a benefit for Occupy Albany at the Albany Social Justice Center.

NEW song and DIY Music Video: "Their Days are Numbered"

Hey friends!
This Fall is so very full and hectic! Lots going on in our lives and in the world. Not sure if I'm going to have time for a full November newsletter this month, but I am excited to release this brand new song and DIY music video: "Their Days are Numbered."

This song is a synthesis of my hopes for and frustrations with the #Occupy movement. I wrote it on 11/25/11, the National Day of Mourning, also known as "Thanksgiving."

I send this song out into the world in the hopes to add my voice to the mix and support those struggling against colonization and all forms of oppression and exploitation.

Please share this with your friends and community, post to facebook, etc., and feel free to remix and use however you see fit (non commercial.) Add your voice to the struggle too! I made this video myself using just my computer. You can too. xoxo

solidarity,
-evan g
